Matt brings a unique perspective to representing employers as he was a member of the Teamsters at UPS and a member of two public employee unions. As in house counsel for the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office he brings the personal experience and bird's eye view of the issues of the workplace and how they are impacted by the law.
Matt has represented his clients in all aspects of labor and employment law. This includes appearing before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), the Department of Industrial Accidents, the Division of Unemployment Assistance, the Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission, the Public Employment Retirement Administration Commission, the State Ethics Commission, grievances, arbitrations and bid protests before the Attorney General's Office.
Matt is on MCAD's list of approved trainers and investigators. He has helped draft legislation as well as testified on Beacon Hill regarding proposed legislation. He has represented the Sheriff's Office in state and federal courts including a case before the Supreme Judicial Court on Public Records laws. He has helped negotiate collective bargaining agreements for the last decade totaling close to 200 million dollars in salary and benefits.
He is also experienced in the legal aspects of the hiring process, employment policies, handbooks, employee discipline and termination. In private practice he has handled Wage Act cases, Workers Compensation Third Party complaints, public retirement cases as well as premises liability and personal injury matters.
Matt is the General Counsel for the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office in addition to working for Foley & Foley. He handles the labor and employment law issues for the Sheriff's Office's 350 employees, including three hundred union employees and five collective bargaining units.
